Man arrested for shooting Dothan woman to death

Robert Francis Schulze, 58, was charged Wednesday afternoon with murdering Charlotte McCall Branton.

A man has been charged with murder after confessing he shot a Dothan woman to death in Florida earlier this week.  Robert Francis Schulze, 57, was arrested Wednesday afternoon—two days after ex-girlfriend Charlotte McCall Branton’s body was found inside a Jacksonville apartment she was vacating to move back to Dothan.  She lived here until a few years ago but had moved away.

Jacksonville Sheriff Assistant Chief Chris Butler, during a press conference, said Shulze reported finding the body when he went to the apartment.  He first denied involvement but “we were able to discount his time line and whereabouts.”  Butler said Branton is believed to have been dead several hours before Shulze called officers.  She had been shot one time.

Butler said the two had dated for about five months but the relationship recently came to an “abrupt” end.  In response to a question regarding reports of volatile text messages exchanged Butler said there is no reported history of violence between the couple.

Ms. Branton was clearing things from the apartment in preparation of taking a job in Dothan where she planned to begin work Thursday.  She had accepted a position with Hometown Lenders.
