James William Ethridge was shot to death in 1951 during a shootout that erupted in Branchville after he went to a café where an argument was taking place.
The award was presented to his sister, Annice Stickland, who resides in Dothan. At the age of 93 Strickland is the last survivor of Ethridge’s seven siblings.
The award was presented in association with National Peace Officers Memorial Day by State Senator Harri Anne Smith. Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson was also present.
The person convicted of killing the chief was executed in the South Carolina electric chair on Nov. 17, 1951.
