Local students choosing to 'compliment' instead of bully

Over 1,000 compliments have been tweeted by the account @HSCompliments but only a few people actually know who's behind it all.

Nationally, more than one in three high school students have been cyber bullied. Students in the Wiregrass know one of the most common tools for gossip is the social media site, Twitter. Hunter Holmes, a senior at Providence Christian says high school students in the area are used to accounts being created that will anonymously post about other students.

"There was a day a couple of weeks ago that an account came up that was talking trash about people or just tweeting basically about things that other people had done that they would regret or they had done at a party or something," said Holmes.

That's when he had the idea to also create an account but this one would be different.

"It just kind of bothered me that people enjoyed that so much so I just wanted to create an account that would show love to each other that showed good thing people did. Good attributes about people and see if people would follow that and enjoy that to see if we could make people feel better than the other account was," said Holmes.

And it did. It now has more than 1,000 followers from private and public schools across the Wiregrass. Hunter and his friend Steven keep the account up, copy and pasting the compliments sent in by other students.

"We anonymously created the Twitter page and we just tweet compliments to try to make each other's day and make everyone happy around Dothan...the bullying was the main reason it just kind of broke our hearts," said Steven Kendrick.

Over 1,000 compliments have been sent in to the account but only a few people actually know who's behind it all.

"I'll be sitting there with a group of friends from other schools and they'll be talking about it and going crazy and I'm just sitting there secretly feeling like I have something special that y’all don't know about... We didn't think it would branch out this far but it did and we're happy to see a lot of people happy because of what we're doing," said Kendrick.

But they want the kindness reaches further than just social media.

"I wish that it would branch into the not online world, in the real world. Just getting people to be nice to each other all the time. It's hard to do but if I could inspire just one person it'd be great," said Holmes.
