Like father, like son: Bixby to coach Geneva girl’s team again

Like father, like son: Bixby to coach Geneva girl’s team again

During 11 years as the head coach, Rich Bixby compiled a 232-80 record.
Just one month ago, former Geneva Superintendent of Education Jim Bixby came out of retirement to return to coaching basketball – taking over the Daleville boy’s program. Now his son Rich says it’s time to get back to doing the same thing.

Bixby will return as the girl’s basketball coach at Geneva after a one year absence. Bixby told “The Dothan Eagle” last year that he was taking time off to spend more time with his family. He admitted at the time that coaching was not out of his blood and agreed to coach the school’s junior varsity girl’s team.

The move gave Bixby the opportunity to still coach but to also spend more time with his family. But the itch to coach on the varsity level was still there. Brent Johnson, who coached the lady Panthers last season, will now coach the junior varsity baseball team.

During 11 years as the head coach, Bixby compiled a 232-80 record. His teams made three appearances in the state final four. The lady Panthers finished as the state runner-up in 2007-08.

Prior to his move to Geneva, Bixby spent two years as an assistant at Geneva County. He began his coaching career as the head coach of the boy’s program at Bethlehem in Holmes County.
