A tightly contested, last second 3-pointer by Reger Dowell sank the Trojans, as Troy (7-12, 2-5 SBC) fell to UT Arlington (8-10, 3-3 SBC), 59-56, on Thursday night. The Trojans had battled back from as many as 10 points down to tie it up with 14 seconds to play.
“They’re effort was at a level that it needed to be to win the game,” said head coach Phil Cunningham. “They played hard. We’re fighting and giving ourselves a chance to win against a really good team at home. It was a game that could have easily gone either way.”
Dowell hit a pair of 3’s in the final 24 seconds, including the game winner. Following Dowell’s first trey, Hunter Williams drained a 3 of his own, seemingly sending the game to overtime. However, UTA pushed the ball up court, with Dowell draining the game-winner among several Trojan defenders.
Williams led the way for Troy with 19 points, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Jeff Mullahey added 12 points and five rebounds, while Josh Warren and Wes Hinton each had seven points off the bench.
Troy shot 34 percent (18-of-53) from the field and 34.8 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc. Troy was outrebounded 40-39. It was the first time this season that Troy was outrebounded in a conference game.
Troy trailed 24-14 with four minutes to play in the first half, but the Trojans went on a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to level the score. Williams and Hinton got the scoring started with back-to-back 3’s. Warren hit a put-back, followed by a Mullahey steal and a jumper by Williams to cap off the run.
The Trojans will stay in Texas for another Sun Belt battle on Saturday afternoon at Texas State. Live stats, audio and video will be available on the men’s basketball schedule page on TroyTrojans.com. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
