The first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated
to the social and economic achievements of American works. It constitutes a yearly national
tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Most people would agree with Sarah Smith when she says it is a day off to be spend with loved ones.
"It means a celebration of being able to rest from your labor and just feeling good and having family time - just having a good time," said Sarah Smith.
That's exactly what some people are doing this holiday, spending time with their family doing fun activities.
"We wanted to be together and spend some fun time and play some games and have fun -and shoot each other with water,” said the Phillip's family from Mariana, Florida.
While some are leaving the Wiregrass and heading to the beach others came in to enjoy the entertainment here.
“It was pretty close to the house and we like Dothan. It's kind of laid back and a little bit of stuff to do around here,” said the Shiver Family who spent the day at Adventureland.
Most people have the day off, including students. But some of the athletes say they prefer to continue working even on holidays.
"We're out here working out and getting fit everybody's off today but we're still on our work day," said Eric Sanchez.
"Since we are athletes we have to stay in shape and do everything we can to stay in shape and stay fit,” Ahkim Walden said.
With a high of 95 degrees some people prefer to spend their day inside.
"We spend our days outside, we're in the lawn care business so we're going to a movie, we went out to eat and did a little shopping,” said Patrick Smith.
So, how ever you spent your holiday remember why we have the day off.
"It's a kind of a tribute to the laborers that keep the country going,” said Patrick.
