Interesting draw awaits Troy at Sun Belt Conference Tournament

The Trojans are prepared to play in New Orleans after locking up a spot in the Sun Belt Tournament on Saturday night.
NEW ORLEANS, La. – After locking up a spot in the 2014 Sun Belt Tournament on Saturday night, the Troy men’s basketball team will travel to New Orleans for what is poised to be an exciting week of competition.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the tournament. Fans wishing to purchase tickets to New Orleans should contact Assistant Director of Development Andrew Dickinson at 256-318-5129.

All games leading up to the championship will be televised live on the Sun Belt Network and can be seen on WatchESPN. The championship game will be televised live on ESPN2. Live stats will be available on the men’s basketball schedule page on TroyTrojans.com.

Troy (11-19, 6-12 SBC) will open up against No. 5 UALR (14-16, 9-9 SBC) on Thursday night at 6 p.m. inside Lakefront Arena. Troy split its two meetings with UALR, with the road team winning each.

The winner will move on to face No. 4 Arkansas State (18-12, 10-8 SBC) on Friday at 6 p.m. Troy also split its two meetings with Arkansas State.

Should the Trojans advance to Saturday’s semifinal, they would face top-seeded Georgia State (24-7, 17-1 SBC) at 2 p.m. Again, Troy split its two meetings with Georgia State.

Sunday’s championship game begins at 12 p.m., and will be televised live on ESPN2.

The Trojans earned the eighth seed in the tournament after downing Texas State, 72-50, on Saturday night. Hunter Williams led the team in scoring, finishing with 19 points. He hit five 3’s on the night to set a new Troy Division I record for made 3’s in a season with 96, passing current assistant coach Ben Fletcher who had set the record at 92 during the 2002-03 season.

Troy closed the season strong, winning two of its last three games, with the loss coming in double-overtime to UT Arlington. The Trojans also defeated ULM in Monroe, La., just over one week ago.

Troy saw some success at the Sun Belt Tournament last season, winning its first game against Florida Atlantic. The Trojans gave heavy-favorite Arkansas State a solid run in their second game, but eventually fell in overtime.
