Holiday travelers are off to an early start

The Houston County Sheriff said the Wiregrass will start to see Fourth of July traffic this weekend.

Fourth of July weekend may be a week away but the Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes says traffic is beginning to pile up.

Many travelers come through the wiregrass to head down to the beach and there are a few things to watch out for.

"Most people who travel from other places such as Atlanta or any points north of here they usually go and stay for a period of time and they may be going to stay from Sunday to Sunday at the end of the holiday weekend,” said Hughes. “So we should be expecting this weekend we will be seeing large amounts of traffic coming through Dothan headed to the beaches for the holiday weekend.”

Sheriff Hughes said most wrecks are avoidable you just need to pay attention and take some safety precautions.

"Don’t follow to closely, make sure you wear your seat belt, i've seen a lot of people whose lives would have been saved if they would have been wearing a seat belt when they had a minor crash. They didn't have their seat belt on, so a minor crash turned into major injuries and possibly death."

He also said many drivers will be impaired and to help get those people off the roads there will be check points.

Sheriff Hughes says the check points will vary from Eufaula to Dothan, then Dothan down to the Florida line and down into Bay County.

"We work very closely in conjunction with other agencies in other states and other counties and we direct our enforcement efforts towards highways where there are large number of accidents and accidents that result in critical injuries or death."

41 million people will travel over the fourth of July holiday weekend nationwide.
