"We appreciate the independence, what has gone before us," said Laketha Ashe, who says they are also celebrating the one-year anniversary of her grandmother’s passing.
"The happiness and joy of being around people that you are loved by” is what the holiday brings for Tina Polk. “Independence just means love by my family and my friends."
And for Alicia Miller, the name of the holiday says it all, “Independence Day, for us to be free.”
They were among hundreds who came out to Water World bright and early.
"The Fourth of July means getting out, celebrating America's birthday, celebrating what all we're blessed with, and just spending time with family,” said Dothan resident Clara Floyd. “And I'm spending time with my daughter today, and we're just getting out, and hopefully, maybe run into a few friends out here, and just enjoy the day."
Sporting events have drawn lots of visitors from out of town. Baseball teams came to Dothan from Tallahassee, Birmingham and Huntsville, among other places.
And some saw it as the perfect occasion for family reunions. The Stringer/Sanders family held its reunion at Water World and Westgate Park, and the Taylor family celebrated at Landmark Park.
"Tremendous day for all of our siblings, and their children and cousins just to learn about what the Stringer family is all about, and truly about how far we go back," said Marty Stringer.
It's been an eventful day for even more people of Dothan, as Mike and Cindy Petty, along with others, decided to get in a little exercise at Westgate and Kiwanis parks.
"Some of the kids and grandkids were through, so we have had pillow fights and eating pop tarts, and they have gone on to other family and all, and we have walked three miles this morning, and, it's getting hot," said Mike Petty.
While some plan on heading out to watch fireworks tonight. Others have another plan, one that includes a cozy home and a little air conditioning.
