UPDATE: Police charged 45-year-old Willie Charles Toney with two counts of capital murder in the death of his ex-wife
"I feel like this is a bad dream that I can't wake up from."
Suzanne Maddox came all the way from Montgomery to enjoy a family gathering this weekend.
Instead, the family will gather to make arrangements to bury her only sister, Thirty-nine year old Rebecca Jackson.
"She's a free-spirited person, a people person, and everyone who knew her loved her,"
Authorities say Jackson's ex-husband, Willie Charles Toney, kidnapped her in front of her children yesterday evening. One of the children called 9-1-1, and the police came to investigate. Jackson's body was later found in Geneva County in a field near Bellwood, and Toney was taken into custody.
Family members say they saw the warning signs.
"We urged her to report whatever was going on,” Maddox said.“ I urged her to change her number and all those things to cut off communication in case things got out of hand."
They say she did what she could to protect herself and her children. The two were divorced in 2002, but remarried in 2006. But Jackson filed a protection order in
August 2013. That protection order was extended in November 2013 and their second divorce was finalized last month.
"Her divorce was final, and he couldn't handle that. The ex could not handle that and took matters into his own hands," said Maddox.
Neighbors say they've seen police cars at the home on more than one occasion. But one neighbor says she never expected anything like this.
"She seemed to be a hard-working lady,” said Lindy Sears. “She worked a lot, she would come home, and I presume she slept some because she worked at night, I think. And her kids are very nice."
"I just ask for your prayers to get over this. It's devastating. It's unexpected," Maddox said.
