Lieutenant Randy Anderson of the Houston County Sheriff's Office, Captain Jeff Carlisle of the Houston County Sheriff’s Office, Benny Dobbs, Dothan Police Department Captain Carlton "Bubba” Ott Jr., Kenneth Robinson and Chief Deputy Donald Valenza of the Houston County Sheriff's Office are all seeking to replace current Sheriff Andy Hughes.
All six candidates will be allowed ten minutes to talk with the Houston County Republican executive committee before facing questions on Monday. The meeting will be at the Holiday Inn near Highway 52 west and will begin at 6 p.m.
Committee Chairman John Gormley told WDHN's Ben Stanfield that the committee would then vote until one candidate received a majority of the vote. The voting will be done by secret ballot. There are 71 members of the executive commitee.
The public is invited to attend the meeting but the voting will be done behind closed doors.
Hughes resigned July 16 to take a job as an assistant director of Homeland Security with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
Governor Robert Bentley will name a replacement for Hughes. Gormley has stated that he hopes Bentley would go with the committee's nomination as his replacement so that no transition would be needed.
