"You don't see it very often where someone is brazen enough to try to break someone out of jail," said Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes.
Just after 6 o’clock this morning Houston County deputies found traces of a break-in at the county jail. Officials believe someone or a group of people tried to enter the jail to break out an inmate or multiple inmates by cutting through the fence and then trying to make their way inside the building.
"There are a lot of security measures built into the design of the facility and they never actually came close to the cell or allowing the inmate to escape," said Hughes.
This morning when they realized what had happened inmates were immediately counted.
"It took a lot of work this morning. We had to move inmates out of certain cells. We had to do a complete search of the jail. Our count this morning was the same as it was last night. We typically count our inmates so no breach of security. Just an attempt and all inmates are accounted for," said Hughes.
Sheriff Hughes says this is the first time anyone has tried to actually break into the jail.
"It's very unusual that you see an outside source attempts to assist someone in a jail break. Most times if you have an escape attempt, someone tries to break out of the jail or they try to use some form of trickery like a medical visit outside of the jail," said Hughes.
They're working on leads and say they hope to make arrests within the next few days.
