Alabama Senate passes smoking ban bill

Measure would stop lighting up in restaurants, shopping areas, other places
The Alabama Senate Tuesday approved a bill that prohibits smoking in most public places including restaurants and retail areas. The 21-8 vote allows smoking in bars, private clubs, and retail tobacco shops.

The measure was sponsored by Senator Vivian Davis Figures who has received Senate approval for smoking ban bills all 16 years she has been in office. However, the House has failed each year to approve the measure thus killing a smoking ban.

If approved by the House this session and signed by the governor the measure would essentially change Dothan’s smoking ordinance that allows businesses to decide whether to allow the use of tobacco products in their establishments.
