Immanuel Lee Williams and Cara Lee Williams were taken into custody Thursday at their Tampa home by FBI Special Agents.
The Trinity Bank on West Main Street in Dothan was robbed Monday by a woman police now identify as Cara Lee Williams. She is 28. Police sources say it’s believed her husband was with her at the time though he doesn’t appear to have entered the bank. Previously, banks in central Florida and one in southwest Alabama were robbed between December, 2012 and mid-October. Investigators believe the Williams' committed all the holdups.
Federal court documents show the couple was nabbed after an investigation that included the use of surveillance cameras, phone records, and witness accounts. Those documents allege that Immanuel and Cara Williams altered their appearance during some, if not all, the robberies. Immanuel, according to the documents, would often wear what’s described as an “Afro-style” wig. The woman who robbed Trinity Bank was wearing thick rimmed glasses and an apparent wig since hair color was far different from that in her booking photo.
It’s not clear why the Dothan robbery led to the arrests when the Williams’ had allegedly been conducting holdups for almost a year. “Investigators began working the case and compared (the Dothan) robbery with others in the area,” Police Chief Greg Benton said in a written release.
