TROY, Ala. – The Troy volleyball program and head coach Sonny Kirkpatrick announced the addition of Lizzie Clough as an assistant coach on Tuesday. A former Troy student-athlete, Clough has been on the Trojan bench the last two seasons as a graduate assistant and student assistant coach.
A three-year letter winner from 2009 to 2011, Clough moved to the bench as a student assistant in 2012.
In her first two seasons on the bench, Clough helped the Trojans to two appearances in the Sun Belt Championships semifinals. Her first season, 2012, saw the Trojans post a 21-12 overall record and a 10-5 Sun Belt mark. The school-record 10 conference wins helped the Trojans to a program-best second place finish in the Sun Belt.
After winning the first Sun Belt Championships match in program history in 2012, the Trojans did so again in 2013, this time defeating No. 1 seed and regular season champion WKU in the quarterfinals of the tournament being held in Trojan Arena.
A defensive specialist for the Trojans from 2009 to 2011, Clough amassed 616 career digs and 49 career service aces, despite only playing in eight matches in 2010 due an injury. She played in all 115 sets of Troy’s 2011 campaign as the Trojans qualified for their first Sun Belt Championships since 2005.
“We had some outstanding people apply for this position, but at the end of the day Lizzie was the best person for the position,” Kirkpatrick said. “She is familiar with the history of the program, the direction of the program and understands everything that we need to do here at Troy University. I couldn’t be happier to have her join my coaching staff in a permanent role.”
“I’ve been at Troy and with this program long enough to understand what it takes to succeed and I love this team,” Clough said. “I’m very thankful to the Troy administration for giving me this opportunity and I’m very excited to be in this position. I can’t wait to get going and see how far we can go with this program.”
Clough was also a three-year letter winner for the Troy track and field program. She was the 2013 Sun Belt Conference Champion in the javelin throw and qualified for the NCAA Track and Field East Regional three times while also being named an Academic All-American twice.
The Mobile, Ala., native received her bachelor’s degree in sport and fitness management from Troy in December 2012, graduating in less than four years. She is currently working on a Master’s in Sport and Fitness Management degree with a concentration in administration at Troy.
The Trojans open their season on Friday, August 29, when they travel to Big Orange Bash hosted by Clemson for four matches. Troy will open its home schedule on Monday, September 1, against Southern Miss at 1 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
