“Definitely the hole locations got a little more difficult with a few more back pins and some below ridges,” head coach Bart Barnes said. “The biggest factor today was the wind. The wind was pretty steady all day at 10 to 15 miles-per-hour and it definitely played a role on some of these holes.
“Today we were close, but the big thing for us is to go back to work on the range and the putting green and just try and clean up a bit. We had a couple of little mistakes around the greens that we can work on and get better.”
The Trojans opened play on the back nine and shot 13-over as a group. Taylor McGraw opened with a birdie and Brooke Spinks dropped in one of her two birdies of the day on No. 11. Troy followed with a much stronger front nine (7-over) thanks to an eagle from Becca Horner and six total birdies.
Fátima Fernández Cano is Troy’s leader in the clubhouse at 2-over following a 74 on Friday. Cano is tied for 36th place overall after missing an eagle putt on No. 1 by a matter of inches. The Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year also picked up a birdie on No. 4.
Taylor McGraw, Horner and Spinks all finished at 6-over on the day. Horner made the turn at 4-over, but quickly erased two strokes with an eagle on No. 1 following an impressive second shot onto the green. McGraw added a birdie on No. 3 to go along with her one on No. 10, while Spinks birdied No. 7. Langley Vannoy finished her second round at 9-over with a pair of birdies.
No. 12 Vanderbilt will carry a six-shot lead over No. 2 Duke into the final round of play. No. 34 Tulane and No. 5 South Carolina are tied for third while No. 20 Virginia is in fifth place. The top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship. Stanford’s Mariah Stackhouse is the individual leader at 5-under.
Troy will be pared with Kentucky and Seton Hall for Saturday’s final round that will begin at 12:10 p.m. (CDT).
