Joe Kines featured speaker at the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame FCA breakfast

BIRMINGHAM – Former coach Joe Kines will be the featured speaker at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Breakfast on Saturday morning, May 17, 2014.

Kines began his coaching career at his alma mater, Jacksonville State University, where he served as assistant coach and defensive coordinator through the 1976 season. From 1977 to 1990, he coached at Clemson University, the University of Florida, the University of Alabama and the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He returned to college coaching in 1991 as the defensive coordinator at the University of Arkansas and was promoted to head coach of the Razorbacks in 1992. He served as defensive coordinator for the University of Georgia from 1995–1999 and left in 2000 to become linebackers coach at Florida State University under ASHOF inductee Bobby Bowden. He returned to the University of Alabama in 2003 and remained there until 2006. Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman hired him as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach in 2008. He retired at the conclusion of the Aggies' 2009 season.

Also speaking at the breakfast will be Buddy Anderson, the 2014 Frank “Pig” House award winner. Anderson is a graduate of Samford University and was a member of Samford’s 1971 National Football Division II National Championship Team. He has been the Head Football Coach at Vestavia Hills H.S. for 36 years. He has also been the Athletic Director at Vestavia for 33 years. His overall record of 308-125 makes him the winningest football coach in the Alabama High School Athletic Association history. He has won two State Championships (1980 & 1998). His teams have made 29 State Playoffs appearances. His playoff record is 46-27. He has won 18 Regional and Area Championships. His regional record is 128-46 most in state history. He was the recipient of the Inaugural Coach Bubba Scott FCA “Lifetime of Influence Award” in 2012.

The Master of Ceremonies for the breakfast will be 1985 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Inductee Mike Kolen “Captain Crunch.” He was a linebacker on the “No-name Defense” of the Miami Dolphins for eight years. He played in three straight Super Bowls helping the Dolphins to win back-to-back in 1973 and 1974. In 1969 he was the first to receive the National Christian Athlete of Year Award.

The FCA will recognize the Male and Female Athletes of the Year for numerous high schools in the area. They will also announce the overall FCA Male and Female High School Athlete of Year Scholarship winners. Each will receive a five hundred dollar scholarship to the university of their choice.

Additionally, the Birmingham Athletic Partnership (BAP) will recognize scholarship winners from each of the Birmingham City schools seven (7) high schools; including the winners of the W. Edgar and Louise C. Welden Founders Scholarship and the Peter W. Field Scholarships.

Members of the ASHOF Class of 2014 include: Ruthie Bolton (Basketball), Red Cochran (posthumously) (Football), Bill Cody (Football), Eli Gold (Broadcasting), Travis Grant (Basketball), Walter Jones (Football) David Magadan (Baseball), Major Ogilvie (Football); along with Distinguished Alabama Sportsmen Dr. Kennith Blankenship and Mr. Charles Kelley.
