TROY, Ala – A dominant performance by Jaycee Affeldt and a pair of home runs helped push Troy (1-1-1) past Kennesaw State (2-2), 5-0, on Saturday at the Troy Softball Complex.

“Very excited that our kids bounced back. As I mentioned, there’s a lot of emotions running through our kids veins right now, but we knew that would be the case. We’re just very happy with the way that we were allowed to play some non-starters today and the way we held tough.

Overall it was just a great team victory. No runs scored and the defense was solid even though we made a couple of miscues. And then Jaycee Affeldt, giving up just an infield single until the last inning. That’s the kind of pitching we need and we’re thrilled that we got it out of her. Just very, very happy with our entire squad.

Troy got all five of its runs in the bottom of the sixth on two home runs. Erica Davis led off the inning with a double, followed by a walk to Ashley Rainey. Becca Hartley pushed the runners over with a sacrifice bunt before Michelle Phelps drew a walk to load the bases. Next up, Heather Johnston came in to pinch hit and crushed the first pitch for her first home run of the year.

The Trojans would go back-to-back, with Meg Willis picking up a pinch-hit home run of her own.

Affeldt was tremendous in the circle, tossing a complete game, two-hitter. She faced just 24 batters in the game, picking up five strikeouts and walking none.

The Trojans play again on Saturday, as they host Memphis at 5 p.m.
