The world’s largest retailer is bringing convenience store-sized Wal-Mart’s to Slocomb, Alabama.
"As mayor I have tried to bring to Slocomb more option and just a progressive plan to add not only jobs but revenue to our economy and we desperately need that,” said Mayor Rob Hinson. “I think we've done great on that over the last six years and I think this is just a continuation of that."
The Wal-Mart Express will also have a pharmacy and gas station and those are things the mayor says Slocomb is in need of.
"There was a study we did by our industrial development board a few months ago that told us one of our biggest gaps for service was the sale of fuel,” said Mayor Hinson. “So, I’m really thinking that is going to be a boost - it’s going to help keep prices down."
With new businesses comes competition, but some locals say that may not be a bad thing.
"Wal-Mart’s always a strong business it'll always bring in more business, so like i was saying competition is good too. A couple of locals were like oh I don't really like it -it's going to compete against our business, especially the pharmacy down the road but I think competition is good,” said Beau Long.
Others are saying even with a Wal-Mart Express, they'll continue to support locally owned businesses.
"I believe that a lot of the businesses that have already been here will be supported I feel like some of the grocery stores we'll all be giving our business to our friends and our family,” said Hilburn Stanley.
The new store will be located on highway 52 just passed Mccollough drive. The construction is set to begin on August 4th and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
"When you can add buildings and add revenue to your economy I think everyone wins in the end,” said Mayor Hinson.
Wal-Mart purchased just over 30 acres of land for the project and ended up giving 27.5 acres to the city. The mayor said he’s not sure what they’ll do with the land yet.
