A former Dothan police officer has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for having sex with a student. Lanice Bonds was sentenced Monday morning by Houston County Circuit Judge Kevin Moulton.

Bonds was arrested in September, 2013 for violating a law that prohibits school personnel from engaging in sexual activity with a student under the age of nineteen. The law was recently passed by the Alabama legislature. In cases not involving school employees the legal age of consent is generally sixteen.

Bonds worked at Dothan High School as a school resource officer at the time of the incident. He was terminated at the time of his arrest.

He pleaded guilty June 9th to the felony charge and was ordered to jail pending sentencing. Moulton denied a request for probation following Bonds sentencing.
