Abbeville businessman Jimmy Rane was named Saturday as Citizen of the Year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association. Rane is president pro tempore of the Auburn University Board of Trustees and CEO of Great Southern Wood Preserving, Inc.

Rane was introduced by Alabama Speaker of the House Mike Hubbard who cited several accomplishments of his friend but always noted they are not the reasons he was chosen Citizen of the Year. Hubbard said it is Rane’s commitment to his hometown that earned him the prestigious award.

Afterwards, Rane joked that Hubbard had not mentioned Rane was chosen World’s Sexiest Man by People Magazine. The comment drew laughter from those in attendance.

“I’m honored to receive this award. “It is especially gratifying since it was given because of the investment I made in my hometown of Abbeville,” Rane said with a serious tone.

Rane graduated from Marion Military Institute before attending Auburn and earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He received a law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University and studied at the Harvard Business School. He also served as a Henry County district judge.

He started the Jimmy Rane Foundation in 2000, which has awarded about 250 four-year college scholarships since it was founded.
