Clearly they do, eleven people have been arrested in the last four months and charged with electronic solicitation of a child.
The Hartford Police Department has been working hard on these cases, but they haven't done it alone. Perverted Justice, an organization who is trained to talk to predators, assists them in the sting.
"They post a profile on a certain website and wait for guys or i guess it could be women to initiate contact with them and they just start talking,” said Ward. “They never mention anything sexually - they wait until the suspect initiates that conversation."
As the arrests continue to rise many people in the community are worried, but Ward said these types of people are all over.
"So many people approach me every week saying I didn't realize we had this type of person in Hartford and it's not Hartford,” said Ward. “Out of the 11 suspects only two have resided here in Hartford the rest have traveled from neighboring towns and even neighboring states to meet these young girls."
It's taken as little as two days for a conversation to begin and an arrest to be made. The police don't have to go far they lure the predator in sometimes to within feet of their future jail cell.
"Murder is a class a felony and so is traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act so it carries a very lengthy sentence."
Chief Ward says they're not giving up yet, they'll continue doing this as long as it takes.
"If you're willing to take the chance of meeting a child for these purposes we're here ready to catch you,” Chief Ward said. “We're going to do everything in our power to make sure this crime is stopped."
