The Enterprise City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to raise the city sales tax by one half of a percent. The money will be allocated to capital improvements for the school system and additional funding for the police and fire departments.

The 5-0 vote increases the overall sales rate to 9 percent and puts it at the same level as Dothan.

Enterprise Fire Chief Byron Herring plans to use the extra revenue to hire eleven additional firefighters.

Superintendent Camille Wright had urged council members to approve the increase to fund needs of the school system. Wright was out of town on business and did not attend the meeting.

The hike goes into affect September 1.
