The six hour journey would soon take a turn neither of them expected.
"They were in the inside lane and a tractor trailer was traveling north and changed lanes into their path and so they actually wound up steering off the road, losing control and that’s when the car crashed into a tree on the side of the interstate,” said family friend Evan Thomas.
Olivia and Seth were rushed to UAB Hospital. Seth walked away with minor injuries and Olivia is still in a coma.
"The doctors are quote guardedly optimistic end quote,” said Thomas. “So, we are just remaining hopeful and prayerful about her situation and her road to recovery and we're praying for a full recovery."
Not only were Olivia and Seth in the car but their two dogs, Mollie and Claire.
When the collision happened both dogs ran in opposite directions. So, friends and family started a Facebook group, “Help find Mollie and Claire.”
The reaction from social media has reached all over the country.
"It started out as a small effort and has grown tremendously over the past 11 days, it exceeded our expectations of what we would have been able to accomplish and it’s been in large part due to the hearts and compassion of Cullman County residents, specifically Cullman, Alabama and Dodge City, Alabama," said Thomas.
On the afternoon of July 8th one of the dogs, Mollie, was found and reunited with Seth. But the family is still on the hunt for Claire, so they called in help from New Jersey. A woman who is a professional dog tracker is coming down to help find Claire.
"We want Olivia to know when she wakes up that her life can return to her normal life, you know,” said Thomas. “These dogs are like family to her and I think anyone that loves animals would want to have your family reunited after a situation like this after tragic circumstance like this.”
A donation fund has been set up at youcaring.com. The money raised will go towards efforts to help find Claire.
