Legendary professional wrestler Ken Lucas died this week in Pensacola. He was 73 and had been in poor health a number of years. Lucas suffered a fall Monday night according to multiple reports.

Lucas is best remembered as a headliner in Gulf Coast wrestling. He was a longtime tag team partner of Dick Dunn and feuded with some of the biggest names in the businesses---among them then NWA champion Jack Brisco.

“He had a heart as big as he was,” said Charlie Platt who spent years as a wrestling commentator and considers himself a good friend of Lucas. Platt is now the host of “Top of the Morning” on WDHN-TV.

“He was brilliant, well read, and intelligent. “He was a music knowledge genius and a good friend to rock and roll pioneer Gene Pitney,” Platt said.

Lucas was a crowd favorite wherever he appeared and performed before sold out crowds including those in the 1970’s at the Houston County Farm Center in Dothan.

Funeral services are pending.
