DOTHAN, Ala.--Aggressive winds and torrential rain from Hurricane Harvey turned structures into debris and roads into ragging rivers from Corpus Christi to Houston, Texas forcing many out of their homes and in need of help.
Many in the community over the weekend began to look for ways they could help those affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Here in the Wiregrass there are already several opportunities available.
One of those is the American Red Cross which provides emergency assistance and disaster relief in times of crisis.
They are seeking donations as well as Wiregrass 2-1-1 which provides lists of ways you can get involved.
"We are looking for people who are interested with helping in shelters or in some other mass care facility like feeding or perhaps just facility management, " said Ken Rice, American Red Cross Disaster Program Specialist.
A few Wiregrass residents are already making there way to Texas.
"Well from our chapter here in the Dothan area we already have six going, there are already five on the way. I'll be going soon and there will be others that will be following along," said Rice.
There's still plenty of time for you to get involved as well.
"There's three ways you can do that. You can go online to the redcross.org or you can call 1-800- RED-CROSS or you can text HARVEY text to 90999," said Rice.
Also, Wiregrass 2-1-1 offers a list of organizations and information to those in the Wiregrass who want to help, from finding homes for displaced animals to giving to those who are in need of food.
"I think we've learned in the past that the best way to help people that are experiencing or affected by a disaster is to donate money so those charitable organizations can use that money to get what it takes for them to do what they need to do there," said David Duke, Wiregrass 2-1-1 Executive Director.
Many here in the Wiregrass are no stranger to severe weather.
"There's no telling when we might need the help here too. The Wiregrass has always been extremely giving, always wanting to help our neighbors those around us as well," said Duke.
