An elderly Houston County couple died Saturday after one of them shot the other then turned the gun on himself in what investigators describe as likely a suicide pact.

The bodies of Laurence and Phyllis Danzer were found at their home in the Lovetown community south of Ashford. Laurence Danzer was 91 years old while his wife was 88. The couple had been married 68 years according to an obituary from Ward-Wilson Funeral Home.

Houston County Sheriff’s spokesperson Captain Antonio Gonzalez said it appears Laurence Danzer killed his wife before taking his own life. The obituary said Mr. Danzer was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army having once commanded the aviation school at Ft. Rucker. It said the couple moved to the Ashford from Michigan about 15 years ago.

Gonzalez did not specify whether the couple left a note regarding their apparent planned deaths.
