Donald Valenza begins his tenure Monday as Houston County sheriff amid support and confidence from his officers and the citizens he serves.

It is a job that only a few weeks ago Valenza didn’t even think about. Content to serve as Andy Hughes’ chief deputy, Valenza’s focus was likely more on retirement than a promotion. However, when Hughes resigned late into his second term, Valenza started to wonder “why not me”?

He was chosen hands down by Republican leadership to replace Hughes on the ballot. With no Democratic opposition the governor appointed Valenza to complete the final few months of Hughes term before he begins his own four-year stint as sheriff in January.

Valenza was the perfect choice. He is honest, forthright, hard-working, and leads by example. Not a lot of flash but absolutely no fade. The longer we know Donald the more we respect him. His knowledge is vast, his law enforcement talent unquestioned, and his dedication superior.

Houston County is lucky to have a man of his qualifications but we’re luckier to have a man of his integrity.

He is the perfect choice.
