DOTHAN,Ala.--October 8 through October 14 is National Fire Prevention Week.
The year's theme is every second counts plan two ways out.
Area fire departments are getting involved by emphasizing the importance of fire safety behaviors.
The number one thing you can do to keep your home and family is safe from a fire is to make sure your smoke detector is working.
"By having a working smoke detector in your home significantly increases your chances of surviving a home fire," said Chris Ethridge, Dothan Fire Marshal.
Fires occur quickly so make sure you are taking extra precautions.
"Not using extention cords, properly discarding of smoking materials and not putting candles around combustables," said Ethridge.
Many fires are cooking related fires so make sure you watch what you are heating and never leave anything unattended.
"We're moving into the fall and we have Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up a lot of people are cooking more than normal as well as having extra directions out," said Ethridge.
It is important practice with your family.
"Conduct exit drills in the home we call it edith, exit drills in the home," said Ethridge.
Make sure escape routes are clear and that windows and doors are not blocked.
"Know two ways out of everyway out of your home. Whether its your bedroom and your in the livingroom and a fire breaks out to know two ways to get out of your home," said Ethridge.
If there is a fire call 911 immediately.
The Dothan Fire Department will be visiting area schools throughout the week and every night this week they will be at Wiregrass Commons Mall from
5:30pm to 8:30 pm to talk with community about prevention and saftey.
