The summer is officially over for Dothan City Schools students.

The halls and classrooms were busy today on the first day of school.

"When I woke up Monday I thought it was Wednesday so I was like super excited,” first grade Slingluff Elementary student Mackenzie Goodwin said.

From kindergarten to twelfth grade this year is all about two things according to fifth grade Slingluff Elementary student Gregory Thornton.

“Have fun and learn at the same time.”

Hallways were packed and students were moving quickly, especially at Northview High School.

This morning almost 400 freshman walked through their double doors for the very first time.

But students aren't the only ones gearing up for the new school year.

“The faculty and staff have worked very hard over the summer to get our building ready to go. Our teachers have prepared, they've really worked hard,” said Slingluff Elementary principal Jeffrey Torrence.

Lesson plans were obviously made because some students were already hard at work writing, reading and using new technology.

“It was very cool because we got our ipads and we got to use them and got to download apps and our teachers were talking to us about all the different apps you'd be using and what we could do with them,” Northview student Crytal Rentas said.

But what's next now that the first day is over?

Alex Reynolds an 11th grader at Northview said, “After school I’m going to go home and rest.”

Everything seems to be starting off right and we wish you all a good year.
